Everything has benefits.
Our current culture includes a persistent systemic force: salesmanship. Salespeople working for companies are incentivized to present all of the benefits of a new product, new technology, or new business.
It'd be nice if there were some balancing force. The salesman is paid to present the benefits, but who is being paid to consider the costs? The salesman has time to find key decision makers, cause the perfect set of op-eds, undermine dissenters, and schmooze their way into personal relationships with leaders. Who has time to put in the same effort to represent the downsides?
At RSFIC we think the answer lies in relocalizing power, growing solidarity, and consuming less. If we were closer to the real decisions about things, we probably wouldn't choose to poison our water and destroy our land so that corn is cheaper. If we controlled our own media we probably wouldn't design it to make ourselves lonelier.
RSFIC doesn't have a complete picture of any sort of independent utopia but we feel confident that moving towards local responsibility & power is the right direction. So each week we send you opportunities to grow solidarity and relocalize power in ways that consume less! For example, this Wednesday at 6PM is our first NRG Skill Share. Folks from around town will discuss planning gatherings and handling low attendance. We've listed a few other events hosted by us and others at rsfic.org/grow-solidarity/events .
